The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) has a legislated mandate to provide national leadership and evidence-informed analysis and advice to mobilize collaborative efforts to reduce alcohol- and other drug-related harms. CCSA activities and products are made possible through a financial contribution from Health Canada through Canada's Drug Strategy.

CCSA works collaboratively with governments, researchers, enforcement agencies, treatment professionals and the private sector to achieve a balanced and holistic approach to addictions that will lead to a healthier and safer Canadian public. Position Title:   Translator (Maternity replacement – 1 year)

The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) changes lives by bringing people and knowledge together to reduce the harm of alcohol and other drugs on society. We partner with public, private and non-governmental organizations to improve the health and safety of Canadians.


Primary Focus

  • Translate texts from English to French (and on occasion from French to English)
  • Edit completed translations done by external firms to ensure consistency with CCSA style and vocabulary standards and to facilitate the delivery of quality communications within required timelines
  • Provide quality control services and advice on language usage for a variety of clients, mainly from CCSA, and coordinate the translation process as a whole
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Human Resources to ensure that CCSA meets its obligations under the Official Languages Act (e.g., development of CCSA annual report on official languages, providing advice)
Responsibilities
  • Create accurate and timely translations from English to French that respect the tone as well as the content of the original text
  • Provide final, high-quality translations of urgent, complex, important texts
  • Edit and revise translations undertaken by external translators to verify the quality of language, the accuracy of the translation, consistency of tone and compliance with CCSA style and terminology
  • Coordinate the translation process, from receiving the translation request to sending the final French text to the Production Manager, to ensure a smooth and effective workflow
  • Perform terminology research required for translating texts to ensure accuracy and consistency
  • Act as a contact for external translators seeking clarification of terminological or issues to ensure consistency and effective understanding of the source text, which will contribute to an improved target text
  • Work with document authors to clarify meaning, as required, which will strengthen the overall quality of target documents
  • Attend weekly meetings with the production team to share information and keep them posted on any issue regarding translation
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Human Resources to develop CCSA's official languages annual report required by the Official Languages Centre of Excellence
  • Promote official languages in the organization as a whole and work with the Director of Human Resources to ensure CCSA meets its obligations
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor degree in translation
  • Minimum of 5 years of applied experience in translation and revision
  • Excellent understanding of written English
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Windows Office Products
  • Experience in using and maintaining Multi-Trans
  • Knowledge of the addictions field an asset
  • Applied experience in providing advice and guidance to clients on French terminology, grammar, etc.
  • Excellent written skills

  • Detail-oriented and accountable for deadlines and quality of work

Position Title:   Human Resources Generalist

Organizational Setting and Reporting:

Working under the direction of the Director, Human Resources, the Human Resources Generalist will work with all divisions within CCSA to provide Human Resources services.

Responsibilities
  • Manages the recruitment process from the initial request for staffing to the onboarding of new employees. This includes, but is not limited to, pre-screening, development of interview questions, reference checks, etc.;
  • In conjunction with the Director, Human Resources, researches, develops and/or revises CCSA HR and Health & Safety policies and procedures. Ensures that follow-up work with regard to policies is completed, (e.g. training and sign offs for Accessibility, Violence in the Workplace, etc.);
  • Provides department required reports, metrics and information;
  • Tracks all vacations and other absences;
  • Manages benefits program;
  • Performs various administrative duties, as assigned;
  • Assists with, or is responsible for, staff events, including Employee Recognition, Staff Retreat, etc.;
  • Develops and/or implements HR-related programs, as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • University graduate;
  • 3-5 years in Human Resources with a minimum of 2 years of experience in recruitment;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Ability and proven track record of working in teams; and
  • Excellent writing skills.

Position Title:  
Knowledge Broker

The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) changes lives by bringing people and knowledge together to reduce the harm of alcohol and other drugs on society. We partner with public, private and non-governmental organizations to improve the health and safety of Canadians.

CCSA is looking for a Knowledge Broker, reporting to the Director of Partnerships and Priorities. The Knowledge Broker is responsible for developing relationships with partners to get the right information into the right hands at the right time, and for supporting the delivery and uptake of evidence informed practices, tools, programs and products for those working in the field of substance abuse.

The Knowledge Broker, working together with Research and Policy Analysts and National Priority Advisors, draws on the existing body of knowledge, research, products and information to interpret bottom-line results and create targeted, practical tools that can change practice. Through facilitating collaborative efforts of stakeholders/partners, the Knowledge Broker encourages the application of this evidence in policy development and practice using effective knowledge exchange approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of knowledge exchange strategies on assigned national priorities.
  • Work with the Research team to summarize research findings to form the basis of appropriate knowledge exchange products, tools or activities to inform policy and program development in the field of substance abuse.
  • Identify and bring together key partners, subject-matter experts, practitioners and community representatives to share evidence, knowledge and best practices to build the foundation for solutions in the substance abuse field.
  • Lead consultations with stakeholders to identify their needs in implementing research and help build their capacity through training and mentoring.
  • Lead collaboration efforts with a variety of stakeholders to negotiate creative, practical and relevant approaches to knowledge exchange for long-term solutions.
  • Work closely with National Priority Advisors and Communications Advisors to identify partners and stakeholders across Canada and ensure they have access to the CCSA tools and resources they need.
  • Continuously establish and maintain networks of stakeholders and partners who can both benefit from and contribute to the collective efforts to reduce the harms and improve the care for those affected by substance abuse.

Qualifications

  • Master's or Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Science, Arts & Humanities, Health Administration, Adult Education).
  • 6 to 10 years of related experience.
  • Experience and/or expertise in the field of alcohol and substance abuse is an asset.
  • Experience negotiating with multi-stakeholder groups (e.g., health professionals, the public, health care managers, private industry).
  • Understanding of all aspects of knowledge exchange (e.g., generation, synthesis, product development, dissemination, exchange, management, evaluation).
  • Experience in developing and implementing knowledge exchange strategies.
  • Experience building relationships with partners at regional, provincial and federal levels to inform or implement best practices
  • Ability to interpret and identify key results from medical research and to succinctly summarize research findings in plain language.
  • Experience in stakeholder consultation through surveys, focus groups, social media, etc.
  • Ability to develop or inform the development of knowledge products such as toolkits, newsletters and policy briefs using feedback from knowledge users.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying best practices in knowledge exchange (e.g., communications, education/training, toolkit development, marketing, stakeholder engagement).
  • Ability to engage diverse audiences and build partnerships/collaborations between medical and non-medical groups.
  • Ability to develop understanding of system-wide issues (i.e., a 'systems thinker').
  • Possess strong analytical skills; is process and results-oriented.
  • Enthusiastic and high-energy team player with a passion for engaging partners.
  • Strong focus on strategic problem resolution.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and French
