Adam’s areas of expertise include alcohol and substance use epidemiology, research methodologies, alcohol policy research and evaluation, economic cost of substance use studies, and alcohol and substance use trends.
Biography:
Adam Sherk is Senior Scientist and Special Policy Advisor with CCSA and an adjunct associate professor with the University of Victoria’s School of Public Health and Social Policy. He has been working in the field of alcohol and substance use for 10 years and was an author of Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health, released by CCSA in January 2023.
Adam’s current projects and interests include the Canadian Substance Use Costs and Harms project, the alcohol–cancer link, and the potential of alcohol policy to decrease cancer incidence and mortality rates across Canadian communities. He is also working on a project to characterize the scope and scale of the alcohol supply and related use across Canada. He is interested in understanding more about the illicit drug supply and the spread of gambling in Canada.
Adam holds a PhD in Social Dimensions in Health from the University of Victoria, an MA in Economics from the University of Western Ontario, and a BSc in Applied Mathematics from the University of Guelph. He’s the author of 40 academic articles and has participated in more than 100 media interviews and stories regarding these topic areas.
Adam, his partner and their two sons live on and operate a small-plot farm, Mulhaven Farm, in Saanich, B.C. He enjoys playing soccer and basketball with his kids, backcountry hiking, reading and running.
